Upgrading GlobalSight
Comparing GlobalSight with WorldServer

The GlobalSight system has been designed to work on the hardware and software listed below.

The list contains those needed for both setting up and using the system.

See also: System requirements by user

Setting up the system

To set up and run the GlobalSight system, you need the configuration below.

GlobalSight Application Machine

The central machine in any GlobalSight deployment is the GlobalSight Application Server. This is the machine that manages all of the GlobalSight processes, including the work-flow, translation memory and document publishing.

The following configurations are supported for the GlobalSight application machine.

Application server supported

  • wildfly-10.0.0.Final

Operating Systems supported

  • 64-bit English Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1
  • 64-bit Ubuntu Linux Server 14.04 LTS version

Java versions supported

  • Oracle Java™ JDK 1.6.0_u45
  • Oracle Java™ JDK 1.8.0_u45 (required by GlobalSight version 8.6.3 and above)

Hardware recommended

The GlobalSight application server should meet the following specifications.

Microsoft Windows Servers

  • Minimum 2 GHz Pentium or compatible processor. Dual processor 3 GHz Xeon is recommended
  • Minimum of 4 GB RAM. 8 GB is recommended
  • Minimum of 10 GB free space on disk before installing GlobalSight. 20 GB is recommended. Additional space is needed for your documents (assets), if they are stored on this machine

Linux Servers

  • Minimum 2 GHz Pentium or compatible processor. Dual processor 3 GHz Xeon is recommended
  • Minimum of 4 GB RAM. 8 GB is recommended
  • Minimum of 10 GB free space on disk before installing GlobalSight. 20 GB is recommended. Additional space is needed for your documents (assets) if they are stored on this machine

The monitor used for working with GlobalSight should have a screen resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels.

Database server

GlobalSight stores information about your installation in a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). For example, your work-flow definitions, translation memory, terminology database, users and so on.

The GlobalSight database can be on the same machine as the GlobalSight server. We recommend, however, that you install the database server on a dedicated computer, and that you locate applications and the content management system on other machines.

The following are the supported configurations for the back-end GlobalSight database server.

RDBMS supported

  • MySQL 5.5.48 (64-bit)
  • MySQL 5.6.28 (64-bit) (applicable to GlobalSight version 8.6.6 and above)
  • MySQL 5.7.11 (64-bit) (applicable to GlobalSight version 8.6.6 and above)

RDBMS Operating Systems supported

  • English Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008
  • Linux

Hardware recommended

Your database machine should meet the following requirements:

Microsoft Windows Servers

  • Minimum 2 GHz Pentium or compatible processor. Dual processor 3 GHz Xeon is recommended
  • Minimum of 4 GB RAM. 8 GB is recommended
  • SCSI RAID Disk Array with a minimum of 100 GB free disk space. 250 GB is recommended

or

Enterprise Linux Servers

  • Minimum 2 GHz Pentium or compatible processor. Dual processor 3 GHz Xeon is recommended
  • Minimum of 4 GB RAM. 8 GB is recommended
  • SCSI RAID Disk Array with a minimum of 100 GB free disk space. 250 GB is recommended

Converters

Microsoft

The Microsoft Office Converters require a dedicated Windows XP/2003 Server Machine with the configuration listed below.

Hardware:

  • Windows-compatible server with a minimum of 1 CPU, and 2Ghz or faster Intel processor(s) only, unless otherwise approved by GS
  • Memory requirements: minimum of 512 MB RAM
  • Hard drive with at least 2MB of free space for each conversion software component and at least 30-40 MB per document format application. Check with each application for specific disk space requirements

Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP/2003 Server

Additional software for the converters:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
  • Microsoft Office 2003/2007/2010. For MS Office converters, 2003, 2007 and 2010 should be installed on separate machines
  • Adobe InDesign CS3/CS4/CS5/CS5.5 /CC 2015. InDesign CS3, CS4, CS5 , CS5.5, and InDeSign CC 2015 should be installed on separate machines
  • Adobe FrameMaker 9
  • SDL Passolo 2011

The Windows machine should be configured using NFS with read and write access from the server on which GlobalSight is running.

The GlobalSight Microsoft Office Conversion Services use the Microsoft office adapter and the .NET framework to import and process Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. Each Office format has its own converter service that can be installed separately from the others. All formats, however, require installation of the .NET framework as described in this document.

Using the system

GlobalSight is a web-based application that runs in your browser.

Users Software
All Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 or later. Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and 11 for tabbed browsing. Other browsers are supported with best effort only.
All Adobe Acrobat Reader for reading PDF versions of documents
Project Managers/Customers Some parts of the application require Java. You are prompted to install, if needed, or you can also download directly from the Oracle website. The versions supported are:
  • Latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.8

Generally, most browsers running on 64-bit Windows are 32-bit applications, thus you also need install the 32-bit (i586) version of Java. You can install both 64 and 32 bit versions without conflict. If you have turned on "Enable Enhanced Protected Mode" in Internet Options on 64-bit Windows, then Internet Explorer will run as 64-bit application.

Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and 64-bit Mozilla Firefox don't support Java plugin.

For any security issues using Java, consider adjusting your security levels as described here.
